Recently the news has been filled with stories of celebrity suicides which in turn has been cause for discussion. Normally it feels like these are things that are never talked about and are taboo in most societies. The CDC is reporting that the suicide rates in the United States are on a steady rise. While the reasons behind suicide may be many, the most common include depression and drug abuse. Both conditions can be treated if appropriate help is received. Individuals feeling sadness, lack of interest in activities they used to enjoy, lethargy, insomnia, weight loss, moodiness and loss of appetite should mention this to their doctor. The process of getting help isn’t as easy as it should be. If you or someone you know is feeling suicidal, get help as soon as possible and avail resources such as the suicide prevention hotline at 1-800-273-TALK available to help all day, everyday.The warning signs of suicide include feelings of hopelessness, wanting to die, talking about guilt or being a burden to others, abuse of drugs and alcohol.
