Genetic Cancer History
- Genetic Cancer History
I have a strong family history of cancer; what is my chance of getting another cancer? How does that change my treatment options? Should I see a genetic counselor?
I think my genetic testing was for 12 different cancers. Even my breast cancer was not related to my mother’s. Someday, it will look like the dark ages. I met with a counselor, had my blood drawn (it went to Masschusetts General Hospital, I didn’t have to), and I met with her to get the results. I also had a hard copy of the report. It was paid for by the researcher. It’s very reassuring. The people treating my cancer were technicians, incapable of teaching anything about genetics, cancer risks, nutrition, and emotional care.
