Cerebral palsy is a group of disorders that affects muscle tone, movement, and motor skills. It hinders the body's ability to move in a coordinated and purposeful way. It can affect other body functions that involve motor skills and muscles. It is caused by damage that occurs to the immature brain as it develops, most often before birth. Brain damage also can lead to other issues, like sight, hearing, and learning problems. Generally, cerebral palsy causes impaired movement associated with abnormal reflexes, floppiness or rigidity of the limbs and trunk, abnormal posture, involuntary movements, unsteady walking, or some combination of these. However signs and symptoms may vary among people and over time.
