Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a common chronic inflammatory lung disease. It causes obstructed airflow from lungs. Symptoms include breathing difficulty, cough, mucus production and wheezing. It is caused by long-term exposure to irritating gases or particulate matter. People with COPD are at increased risk of developing heart disease, lung cancer and a variety of other conditions. COPD is a group of progressive lung diseases. The most common are emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Many people with COPD have both of these conditions. Smoking is the main cause of COPD. Other COPD risk factors include exposure to certain gases or fumes, heavy amounts of secondhand smoke and pollution, and frequent use of a cooking fire.
