What is Endometriosis? click to learn more.
Endometriosis a painful disorder in which tissue that normally lines the inside the uterus grows outside the uterus. Endometriosis most commonly involves ovaries, fallopian tubes and the tissue lining the pelvis. Rarely, endometrial tissue may spread beyond pelvic organs. Endometrial tissue growing outside of your uterus is known as an endometrial implant. Displaced endometrial tissue continues to act as it normally works i.e. it thickens, breaks down and bleeds with each menstrual cycle. The hormonal changes of your menstrual cycle affect the misplaced endometrial tissue, causing the area to become inflamed and painful. This means the tissue will grow, thicken, and break down. Over time, the tissue that has broken down has nowhere to go and becomes trapped in your pelvis.
