Gout is a common and complex form of arthritis that can affect anyone. It's characterized by sudden and severe attacks of pain, swelling, redness and tenderness in the joints, usually the joint at the base of the big toe. Gout attacks can come on quickly and keep recurring over time, slowly damaging tissues in the area of the inflammation, and can be extremely painful. Hypertension, cardiovascular, and obesity are risk factors for gout. Gout is the result of excess uric acid in the body, a condition called hyperuricemia.
