Melanoma is not the most common type of skin cancer, but is the most serious because it often spreads, develops in the cells (melanocytes) that produce melanin — the pigment that gives your skin its color —mutate and become cancerous. Melanoma can also form in your eyes and, rarely, in internal organs, such as your intestines. Knowing the warning signs of skin cancer can help ensure that cancerous changes are detected and treated before the cancer has spread. Melanoma can be treated successfully if it is detected early.
